Wall Street teaches finance behind bars at San Quentin

Wall Street teaches finance behind bars at San Quentin

An unusual classroom has opened inside San Quentin prison, where an incarcerated instructor is teaching financial literacy and life skills to fellow inmates. The program, which draws on Wall Street principles, aims to help prisoners rethink their past decisions and build a sense of purpose for the future.

The instructor, a former finance professional now serving time, leads sessions on budgeting, investing, and understanding credit. Students learn how compound interest works, how to read a balance sheet, and why financial discipline matters. But the lessons go beyond numbers. Inmates discuss how poor money choices often fueled their crimes, from drug deals to fraud. They talk about the pressure to provide for families through illegal means and how a lack of financial knowledge kept them trapped.

One participant said the class changed how he sees his own potential. "I never thought I could understand this stuff," he said. "Now I realize I was smart enough to make money the right way. I just never had the chance."

The program has drawn attention from outside investors and educators who see it as a model for reducing recidivism. Organizers argue that giving inmates practical skills and a new identity as learners can break cycles of crime. For many inside San Quentin, the classroom offers something rare: a chance to plan a legal future.
