Block's Square division is rolling out an updated version of its business credit card, aiming to keep smaller merchants loyal as the payments industry heads into a period of heavy consolidation. The refreshed card adds new cash-back incentives and connects directly to faster digital transfer networks, letting sellers move funds more quickly than traditional bank settlement times.
The move lands at a moment when major players are reshuffling. Stripe is reportedly in talks to acquire PayPal, a deal that would reshape the competitive landscape for payment processing. Meanwhile, AI developer platform OpenRouter has also attracted acquisition interest, signaling that capital is flowing into adjacent tech sectors. For Square, the timing is strategic. If Stripe and PayPal combine, smaller sellers may face fewer choices among large processors. By sweetening its own card offering, Square is trying to lock in its existing base before those bigger rivals gain more scale.
The upgraded card ties rewards directly to spending patterns, with bonus categories for common business purchases like software subscriptions and office supplies. It also links to Square's instant transfer feature, so merchants can move earned funds to a bank account or debit card within minutes rather than waiting days. That feature has become a key differentiator for independent retailers and service workers who rely on steady cash flow.
Industry analysts note that consolidation often pushes smaller firms to renegotiate fees or switch platforms. Square's refresh appears designed to reduce that churn risk. The company has not announced any changes to card pricing, but the added perks suggest it is willing to invest in retention. With Stripe and PayPal potentially merging, and other fintech deals in the pipeline, the next few quarters could determine which platforms hold onto their customer base. For now, Square is betting that better card terms and faster payouts are enough to keep its sellers from wandering.
