McEwen Copper in Talks With Rio as It Seeks $4 Billion Financing

Rob McEwen's copper-focused venture has entered discussions with Rio Tinto Group and several other prospective backers as it looks to secure a combined $4 billion in financing for a new mining operation in Argentina. The talks mark a significant step for the project, which has been in development for years and is now moving closer to a final investment decision.

The company, a subsidiary of McEwen Mining, is aiming to fund the construction of a large-scale copper mine in the Andean region of the country. The total capital requirement includes both initial development costs and infrastructure needs, such as roads, power supply, and water management systems. McEwen has previously stated that the project could become one of the largest copper producers in the region once operational.

Rio Tinto, one of the world's biggest mining firms, has been expanding its copper portfolio in recent years, particularly in South America. A partnership would give Rio access to a promising deposit while providing McEwen Copper with the financial muscle needed to move forward. However, no binding agreement has been reached yet, and the talks are still in an early phase.

Beyond Rio, McEwen Copper has been in touch with other strategic investors, including commodity traders and sovereign wealth funds. The company is also considering a public listing or a private placement to raise part of the funds. The goal is to close the financing gap by the end of next year, with construction potentially starting in 2026.

The project has drawn attention because of the growing global demand for copper, driven by the transition to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems. Argentina, despite its economic challenges, is seen as a favorable jurisdiction for mining investment due to its rich mineral reserves and recent policy shifts aimed at attracting foreign capital.

McEwen has said he remains confident about the project's viability, citing strong copper prices and the strategic importance of securing new supply sources. He has also noted that the company is open to different deal structures, including joint ventures or streaming agreements, as long as they align with shareholder interests.

For now, the focus is on completing due diligence and negotiating terms with potential partners. A successful financing round would mark a major milestone for McEwen Copper and could reshape the competitive landscape in the region's copper sector.
