Adults are using AI for financial guidance, but few trust it

A new survey shows that a growing number of American adults are turning to artificial intelligence tools for financial guidance, yet a striking lack of confidence in the technology persists. The findings highlight a paradox: people are using AI for budgeting, investment questions, and retirement planning, but they still view it as a secondary resource rather than a reliable authority.

The research indicates that while usage has climbed steadily over the past year, only a small fraction of users say they fully trust the recommendations they receive. Many respondents described AI as a convenient starting point for organizing their finances, but they expressed hesitation when it came to acting on its advice without cross-checking with a human professional. Concerns about accuracy, outdated data, and the inability of AI to grasp personal circumstances were cited as the main reasons for the skepticism.

Financial experts note that this cautious approach is actually healthy. AI can process vast amounts of information quickly and help users spot patterns they might miss, but it cannot replace the nuanced judgment of a certified planner who understands a client's risk tolerance, family situation, and long-term goals. The survey also found that younger adults, particularly those under 35, are more willing to experiment with AI tools, while older generations remain more resistant.

As the technology improves, the gap between usage and trust may narrow. For now, the takeaway is clear: Americans are curious about what AI can do for their wallets, but they are not ready to hand over the reins. The most common approach appears to be using AI for basic calculations and general education, then bringing those findings to a human advisor for a final decision. That hybrid model, experts say, is likely to define the near future of personal finance.
