There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. For years, the golden rule of investing has been simple: do not put all your eggs in one basket. Diversification is preached as the only free lunch in finance, a way to smooth out volatility and protect against a single company or sector collapsing. But in the rush to spread risk, many investors have fallen into a trap. They are diversifying without really diversifying.
The danger lies in owning dozens of stocks or funds that all move in the same direction. An investor might hold shares in five different technology companies, a tech-heavy ETF, and a growth fund that also leans heavily on the same names. On paper, it looks like a varied portfolio. In reality, it is a concentrated bet on one corner of the market. When the tech sector catches a cold, the entire portfolio sneezes. True diversification means owning assets that react differently to the same economic event. It means mixing stocks with bonds, domestic holdings with international ones, and large companies with small ones.
Another common mistake is over-diversification. Buying a little bit of everything might feel safe, but it often leads to mediocre returns. If you own 50 different stocks, the strong performance of your best picks gets drowned out by the average or poor performance of the rest. You end up owning the market at a higher cost, with no real edge. The key is not to own as many things as possible, but to own the right things that balance each other out. A truly diversified portfolio is built with intention, not just accumulation. It requires regular rebalancing and a clear understanding of what each holding actually brings to the table. Without that, you are just paying for the illusion of safety.
