DENVER, CO - Governor Jared Polis today signed the bipartisan 2026 School Finance Act into law, marking a significant investment in Colorado's public education system. The legislation, known as SB26-023, will funnel an additional $180 million into K-12 schools across the state.
The bill was sponsored by Senator Chris Kolker, a Democrat from Centennial, along with Representatives Meghan Lukens, a Democrat from Steamboat Springs, and Emily Sirota, a Democrat from Denver. Supporters say the funding will help address longstanding gaps in school budgets, including teacher salaries, classroom resources, and special education programs.
The new law aims to reduce the burden on local property taxpayers while ensuring schools have the money they need to operate. Lawmakers from both parties worked on the compromise, which also includes adjustments to the school funding formula to better account for student population changes and regional cost differences.
"This is about making sure every child in Colorado has access to a quality education, regardless of their zip code," said Senator Kolker during the signing ceremony. "This investment is a step toward fixing years of underfunding."
Opponents argued that the increase is not enough to meet the growing needs of rural and urban districts alike. However, the bill passed with enough support to avoid a veto, and education advocates are calling it a positive start for the upcoming fiscal year.
