Supporters of Alaska's current voting system have filed campaign finance complaints against the group pushing to repeal ranked choice voting, alleging it is hiding the true source of its funding. The complaints, submitted to the Alaska Public Offices Commission, accuse the repeal effort, known as Repeal Now, of misrepresenting its top donors on official disclosure forms.
At the heart of the issue is whether the group is properly identifying the individuals and organizations behind its major contributions. Critics argue that Repeal Now has listed donors in a vague or misleading way, making it difficult for voters to know who is really bankrolling the campaign to scrap the system. Alaska voters adopted ranked choice voting in 2020 through a ballot measure, and it was first used in a general election in 2022. Since then, it has drawn both praise for promoting moderation and criticism for confusing voters and leading to unexpected outcomes.
The complaint claims that Repeal Now failed to report contributions from out-of-state conservative groups that have a history of opposing ranked choice voting nationwide. Supporters of the current system say transparency is essential, especially when a small group of wealthy donors could be trying to overturn a law passed by the people. Repeal Now has not yet issued a public response to the specific allegations, but the group has previously argued that its filings are accurate and that the complaints are a distraction from the real issue: giving voters a chance to reconsider a system they say is flawed.
The Alaska Public Offices Commission will now review the complaints and decide whether to open a formal investigation. If violations are found, the repeal campaign could face fines or other penalties. Meanwhile, both sides are gearing up for what promises to be a contentious fight ahead of the next election.
