A 37-year-old woman, Vanessa O'Rourke, has been indicted on 15 counts of wire fraud after prosecutors say she fabricated a cancer diagnosis to solicit donations that she then used to pay for vacations and personal expenses. The indictment, filed last month, alleges that O'Rourke told friends, family, and online supporters she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, including specific claims about brain tumors and other ailments.
According to court documents, O'Rourke set up a fundraising campaign and accepted direct payments from people who believed they were helping cover her medical bills. Instead, investigators say she spent the money on flights to Australia, luxury hotel stays, and shopping sprees. The scheme allegedly ran for several years, during which O'Rourke provided fake medical documents and staged updates about her treatment to keep the donations flowing.
Authorities say the total amount raised was over $100,000. O'Rourke now faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all counts. Her attorney has not commented on the specific allegations but has indicated they plan to review the evidence. The case has drawn attention to the growing problem of fraudulent medical crowdfunding, where bad actors exploit the generosity of strangers and loved ones. A trial date has not yet been set.
