A growing number of Gen Z workers are choosing Roth IRAs over traditional retirement accounts, and financial experts say the trend reflects a smart shift in long-term planning. Unlike a standard IRA, contributions to a Roth IRA are made with after-tax dollars. That means you pay taxes on the money now, but withdrawals in retirement are tax-free, including all the investment growth.
For younger people just starting their careers, this can be a powerful advantage. Most Gen Z earners are in lower tax brackets than they will be later in life. Paying taxes on contributions today, when their income is relatively low, allows them to lock in those rates. When they retire and potentially face higher taxes, the money they pull out will not be taxed again.
Another key benefit is flexibility. Roth IRA contributions can be withdrawn at any time without penalty, which appeals to a generation that values liquidity and financial freedom. While earnings have restrictions, the ability to access the original money you put in offers a safety net that traditional retirement accounts do not.
There is also no required minimum distribution, or RMD, with a Roth IRA. That means account holders can let their money grow untouched for as long as they want, passing it on to heirs tax-free if they choose. For Gen Z, who face an uncertain future for Social Security and rising living costs, having a tax-free income stream in retirement is a major draw. The message is clear: pay a little now to avoid a bigger tax bill later.
