The era of the virtual meeting is here to stay, but many of us still treat our webcams like an afterthought. We sit in dim light, angle the camera up our noses, and wonder why we feel tired before the call even starts. Looking and sounding your best on video does not require expensive equipment; it simply requires a little awareness and preparation.
First, fix your lighting. The single biggest improvement you can make is to face a window. Natural light is soft and flattering. If you are on a call after dark, place a lamp directly behind your computer screen, not above you. Overhead lights create harsh shadows under your eyes and nose. Second, adjust your camera height. Your lens should be at eye level. Stack a few books under your laptop if needed. This prevents the unflattering "looking down" angle and keeps you from straining your neck.
Third, clean your lens. It sounds obvious, but a smudged webcam makes everything look soft and blurry. A quick wipe with a microfiber cloth takes ten seconds. Fourth, manage your audio. Your laptop microphone picks up every echo and keyboard click. If you cannot use a headset, move the computer closer to you and mute yourself when you are not speaking. A quiet room is more professional than any background filter.
Finally, dress the part. You do not need a full suit, but wearing a solid color top with a simple collar frames your face better than busy patterns or all-black clothing. A small effort here signals to others that you are present and engaged. Virtual meetings may feel informal, but treating them with the same care as an in-person conversation makes a lasting impression.
