Michelle Wolf has built a career on sharp, uncomfortable truths. In a recent interview, the stand-up comedian reflected on her unlikely path from the trading floors of Wall Street to the comedy stage, her transatlantic move, and the fallout from roasting a sitting president.
Wolf, who once worked at Bear Stearns, joked that she did not just leave finance -- she helped bring down the firm. She described the high-pressure world of derivatives trading as a brutal education in absurdity, one that prepared her perfectly for the circus of American politics. "You learn very quickly that everyone is bluffing," she said.
Her decision to leave New York for Europe was, in her words, a search for sanity. She found the pace of life in cities like London and Berlin more conducive to writing and thinking. But the pull of the US stage, and the chaos she left behind, eventually brought her back.
Wolf is best known for her 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner set, where she skewered Donald Trump and his administration. The performance drew furious backlash from Trump supporters and even some journalists. Wolf said she never expected the level of hate, but she does not regret a single joke. "He was an easy target," she said. "The problem was not the jokes. It was that people forgot what a roast is supposed to be."
She also took aim at the current comedy landscape, particularly the rise of "podcast bros" who mistake cruelty for honesty. Wolf argued that real comedy requires vulnerability, not just punching down. "Anyone can be mean," she said. "It takes skill to be funny and true."
Now based back in the US, Wolf continues to tour and develop new material. She says she is done explaining herself to people who were never going to laugh anyway.
