Amazon accounted for more than half of Rivian's total revenue in the first quarter of 2026, a disclosure that drew sharp criticism from noted short-seller Jim Chanos. The electric vehicle maker reported the numbers during its latest earnings call on Thursday, revealing that the e-commerce giant made up over 50% of its top line.
The news prompted a blunt reaction from Chanos, who posted a simple "Yikes" in response to the data. The comment highlights growing concerns about Rivian's ability to diversify its customer base beyond its largest backer.
During the earnings call, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe addressed questions about interest from non-Amazon buyers for the company's commercial vans. "Our relationship with Amazon continues to be something that we are very proud of," Scaringe said. He added that production of the vans would continue to ramp up to meet the e-commerce company's needs.
While the partnership has provided Rivian with a steady revenue stream, analysts warn that such heavy dependence on a single client poses a significant risk. If Amazon were to scale back orders or shift to another supplier, Rivian would face a major financial hit. The company has been working to expand its consumer vehicle lineup, but the latest numbers suggest that commercial sales remain the dominant driver of its business.
